With the holiday season upon us, it’s no surprise that shopping is big with most American families. However, this also means that most families will also be available, like no other time of the year, to watch movies, and which studios wish to capitalize on by releasing their movies at this time.
So, here are 5 holiday season movies that are worthy Oscar contenders:
#1: The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey
The Lord of the Rings trilogy won eleven Oscars and this movie intends to compete for most awards at the Oscars. Of course, this goal won’t be impossible to achieve if it manages to live up to the standards set by the trilogy a few years ago. It will be released on December 14.
#2: The Impossible
Set in Thailand during the 2004 tsunami, this movie deals with a family who get separated at the time and how they find each other again. With an impressive backstory and great acting from Naomi Watts, it look like an Oscar nominee right from the word go. The movie will be released on December 21.
#3: Zero Dark Thirty
With its release pushed back for the reason that it would give Obama an advantage in the Presidential elections, the movie is a real contender, for every award, by the director of the Hurt Locker. It covers the story of how Osama Bin Laden was caught and will be released on December 19.
#4: Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino directs this movie in which Jamie Foxx is Django, a slave whose freedom is bought to offer his services as a bounty hunter. The movie has a host of Oscar level performers with DiCaprio playing the plantation owner who keeps Django’s wife enslaved. The movie has already won a screenwriting award at the Hollywood film festival and will be released on December 25.
