Gotham, sharing the dark theme that is present in the Tim Burton/ Christopher Nolan movies, still manages to portray the urban jungle in which its characters thrive and survive, quite differently.
And even though a Batman story without the presence of Batman can mean a cancellation, the show which revolves around James Gordon, still manages to impress audiences.
In this series, Gordon, who is an army veteran, partners with Bullock at Gotham’s police department. The former, being a righteous cop, has to contend with the pragmatism of the latter who is actually friends with a number of criminals but isn’t corrupt.
When a mugger kills Bruce Wayne’s parents, Gordon promises the young boy that he will find the killer. But this is as far as the storyline stays true to the Batman comics since series creator mixes it up a bit, which will probably cause a furore amongst Batman fanboys.
The killer of Batman’s parents isn’t just a mugger and this is proved when a young pickpocket by the name of Selina Kyle reveals this to Gordon.
As a result, both Gordon and Bullock begin their investigation and come across a number of villains who will, in the future, turn out to be sworn enemies of Batman. Amongst the lot, Robin Lord Taylor, who plays the Penguin, has already endeared himself to fans already.
Edward Nygma and Ivy Pepper also make their presence felt as we move further into each episode. Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred, resembles Michael Caine more than the late Michael Gough.
The only weak link in the show is Fish Mooney played by Jada Pinkett Smith. Yet without a doubt, this is one television series you wouldn’t want to miss out on.
