Even if critics of The Walking Dead consider Rick’s character to be the least interesting, the truth is that if you kill Rick, the show is as good as dead. Yet it isn’t true that he is the least interesting character on the show either.
That said, and compared to previous seasons, season 5 avoids the linear storytelling format and goes with a disconnected storyline approach which takes the focus on Rick. Of course, it did feel as if something was missing since the show is about his journey.
Yet the episodes themselves weren’t so bad either as one can think of this as a way for the creators of the show to throw a little light on the other members of its cast.
Whether it’s Shane’s disastrous meltdown or even that of the Governor to even the cannibal Gareth, it’s still hard to not look at these events without seeing how it affects Rick.
While his character’s development has been slow and subtle, Carol’s transformation from a meek and victimized housewife to a warrior has been more dramatic, to say the least.
Even though he has been a man of action, it has been his last resort. But considering the events that have occurred since then, he did not hesitate when it comes to killing Shane, Dave or Tony. Now, it’s the first thing he does – if only to survive.
That makes him just as much of a villain as the other characters who have come up against him and fallen. And which is why it makes absolutely no sense as to why his character comes across as boring.
