Skyfall, the twenty-third James Bond flick, has enjoyed critical acclaim just as Casino Royale did in 2006, thanks to Daniel Craig’s performance. If that’s not enough, the franchise’s latest installment has already grossed more than $320 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing Bond flick ever yet it’s also been made clear by Craig – that he wants to “move on”.
In an interview with the Rolling Stones magazine, Craig admitted his true feelings, in saying, “I’ve been trying to get out of this from the very moment I got into it but they won’t let me go, and I’ve agreed to do a couple more, but let’s see how this one does, because business is business and if the shit goes down, I’ve got a contract that somebody will happily wipe their ass with.”
The comments might come across as ungratefulness considering the fact that, as a movie star, he was relatively obscure during his pre-Bond years.
Yet Craig isn’t the first Bond to feel this way as Connery also felt constricted by the image of playing Bond and which did not give him the freedom to explore other roles. Of course, it might difficult for fans of his to sympathize with him as they not only think he plays Bond very well but also does make a substantial amount of money for his efforts.
One also wonders whether he implied that he was tired of it or just had a bad day when he sat to take this interview with the Rolling Stones magazine.
Yet Sam Mendez throws light on these comments by saying that an actor’s privacy disappears when playing a role such as this one – an experience known to only the two best Bonds ever.
